The Life Agent license is the narrower Texas life license, with its own exam. It covers life insurance without the health lines, and suits someone who wants life products but not the full General Lines LAH authority.

What exam day looks like
The exam is 90 questions in 120 minutes at a Pearson VUE test center. 80 are scored, 50 general and 30 Texas law, and 10 are unscored pretest items. You need a scaled score of 70, which is not a percentage of questions correct.
Because the general portion is only 50 questions while the Texas portion stays at 30, Texas law makes up a larger share of this exam than of the General Lines exams. It deserves proportionally more study time.

What the Texas portion covers
The Texas questions come from licensing law, unfair practices and Texas life and health law: free look periods on life policies and annuities, grace periods and the contestable period, how quickly a death claim must be paid, and the rules on replacement and inducements.
Life Agent or General Lines LAH
Life Agent is a shorter exam and a narrower license. General Lines LAH adds accident, health and HMO authority, and since Texas does not issue a health-only license, it is the only way to add health on the life side.
If health coverage is part of the plan from the start, General Lines LAH is the more direct choice. If the business is life insurance alone, Life Agent is the lighter exam.
Common questions
- Is there a pre-licensing course requirement?
- Not for the permanent license. The exam is the requirement. Texas also has a one-time, 180-day temporary license that cannot be renewed; check TDI for its conditions.
- Can I sell health insurance with this license?
- No. Health authority comes with the General Lines: Life, Accident, Health and HMO license, which has its own exam.
- What happens after I pass?
- Apply to TDI within one year, or the exam must be retaken. The application fee is about 50 dollars and most applicants are fingerprinted through IdentoGO. Continuing education is 24 hours every two years, including 3 hours of ethics.
