What the Texas portion covers

The Texas questions draw on licensing law, unfair practices and Texas property and casualty law. Expect auto policy rules such as personal injury protection, uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage and notice before cancellation or nonrenewal, along with TWIA, the Texas FAIR Plan and the Texas Automobile Insurance Plan Association.

After you pass

Apply to TDI within one year of passing, or the exam must be taken again. The TDI application fee is about 50 dollars and most applicants are fingerprinted through IdentoGO; confirm current fees at tdi.texas.gov. Appointments must be filed with TDI before you transact business.

Continuing education is 24 hours every two years, with 3 hours in ethics.

Common questions

How is this different from General Lines P&C?
It is a narrower license with a shorter exam: 110 questions in two hours, against 145 in two and a half hours for General Lines: Property and Casualty.
Do I need a pre-licensing course?
Not for the permanent license. The exam is the requirement. A one-time, 180-day temporary license also exists, cannot be renewed, and has its own conditions set by TDI.
What score do I need?
A scaled score of 70. It is reported on a scale, so it is not the same as 70 percent of the questions correct. Pretest questions are not scored.
