Accident and Health or Sickness Agent
The Accident and Health or Sickness Agent license covers health, disability and accidental death coverage without the life lines. Its exam is the health half of the combined California life and health exam.

What exam day looks like
The exam is 75 questions in 90 minutes, given by PSI at a test center, at the CDI examination site in Los Angeles, or online with remote proctoring. The passing score is 60 percent.

What the California material covers
Medicare supplement rules are a large share: the six-month open enrollment that starts when a person is both 65 or older and enrolled in Part B, the annual birthday open enrollment, and the disclosure and marketing rules for those policies.
Expect long-term care consumer protections and the training an agent must complete before selling long-term care, and the split of health plan oversight between CDI and the Department of Managed Health Care, along with licensing law and unfair practices.
Long-term care training
An agent who sells long-term care insurance must complete the initial training before soliciting individual consumers, then eight hours in each of the first four 12-month license periods and eight hours before each renewal after that. For a resident licensee those hours count toward continuing education.
Common questions
- Can I sell life insurance with this license?
- No. Life insurance and annuities need the Life-Only license or the combined Life, Accident and Health or Sickness exam.
- Do I need a prelicensing course?
- You need the one-time 12-hour course on ethics and the California Insurance Code, completed before the license is issued. The 20-hour accident and health course was repealed from January 1, 2026. Confirm the timing with CDI.
- What continuing education applies?
- Resident accident and health agents complete 24 hours before each renewal, three of them in ethics. Long-term care training is added for agents who sell it.
