Life-Only Agent
The Life-Only Agent license covers life insurance and annuities without the health lines. Its exam is half the length of the combined Life, Accident and Health or Sickness exam, and suits someone whose business will be life products alone.

What exam day looks like
The exam is 75 questions in 90 minutes, given by PSI at a test center, at the CDI examination site in Los Angeles, or online with remote proctoring. The passing score is 60 percent.

What the California material covers
The California questions come from licensing law, unfair practices and California life law: the 10 to 30 day free look on individual life policies, a free look of at least 30 days for buyers 60 or older, the replacement statement and notice, senior annuity replacement, group life conversion, and the California Life and Health Insurance Guarantee Association.

Life-Only or the combined exam
The Insurance Code lets you meet the life and the accident and health requirements with separate exams or with one combined exam. If health coverage is part of the plan, the combined 150-question exam gets both licenses in one sitting. If the business is life insurance and annuities alone, Life-Only is the shorter exam.
Common questions
- Can I sell health insurance with this license?
- No. Health, disability and accident coverage need the Accident and Health or Sickness license, which you can get through its own exam or through the combined life and health exam.
- Do I need a prelicensing course?
- You need the one-time 12-hour course on ethics and the California Insurance Code, completed before the license is issued. The 20-hour life course was repealed from January 1, 2026. Confirm the timing with CDI.
- What happens after I pass?
- The license must issue within 12 months of passing. An insurer appointment must be on file before you act as its agent, and resident life agents complete 24 hours of continuing education before each renewal, three of them in ethics.
