Florida life and variable annuity (2-14)

The 2-14 licenses life insurance and annuities without the health lines. It is a narrower exam and a narrower license than the 2-15, and a good fit for an agent focused on life protection and retirement products.

What exam day looks like

The 2-14 exam is 95 questions in 2 hours, of which 85 are scored and the remainder are unscored pretest items. The passing bar is 70 percent of the scored questions, given in person at a Pearson VUE center.

There is no health content on this exam. The national material is life policies, life policy provisions and annuities, and the Florida law portion is the same body of state content that every line carries.

What the license lets you do

A 2-14 agent may sell life insurance and both fixed and variable annuities, but not health or disability coverage. As with the 2-15, variable products also require FINRA registration because they are securities.

It is the lighter of the two common life-side licenses: 30 hours of pre-licensing against the 60 the 2-15 demands, in exchange for giving up the health authority.

2-14 or 2-15

The 2-14 makes sense when life and retirement products are the whole business and health is not part of the plan. It reaches the same life and annuity authority for fewer hours and a shorter exam.

An agent who later wants health can take the 2-40 separately, or sit the 2-15 to hold the combined authority in one license. For most people intending to sell health from the start, the 2-15 is the more direct choice.

Common questions

What is the difference between the 2-14 and the 2-15?
The 2-14 covers life insurance and annuities only. The 2-15 adds health and disability authority. If health is part of your business, the 2-15 is the license to take.
How many pre-licensing hours does the 2-14 require?
30 hours through a DFS-approved provider, half of what the 2-15 requires, reflecting the narrower syllabus.
Can I add health authority later?
Yes. You can take the 2-40 health license separately, or the combined 2-15. There is no need to surrender the 2-14 to do so.
