What exam day looks like
The 2-40 exam is 95 questions in 2 hours, with 85 scored and the rest unscored pretest items. You pass at 70 percent of the scored questions, in person at a Pearson VUE center.
No life or annuity material appears. The national content is health policies and health policy provisions, and the Florida law portion is the same state content shared across every line.
What the license lets you do
A 2-40 agent may sell health and accident coverage, major medical, Medicare supplement, long-term care and disability, but not life insurance or annuities. It is a focused license for a health-and-senior book of business.
Medicare-related sales carry federal marketing rules on top of the state license, including annual product certification set by the carriers rather than by Florida. The license lets you sell; the federal rules govern how you may market.
After you pass
Apply through DFS MyProfile, clear the background check, and secure an appointment before writing business; the license is inactive until then. The passing score is valid for one year.
Continuing education is 24 hours every two years for the first six years, including the 4-hour law and ethics update, then 20 hours.
Common questions
- How is the 2-40 different from the 2-15?
- The 2-40 is health only. The 2-15 adds life and annuity authority. An agent who sells health but not life takes the 2-40 for a shorter course and exam.
- How many pre-licensing hours does the 2-40 require?
- 40 hours through a DFS-approved provider.
- Does the 2-40 cover Medicare products?
- It covers Medicare supplement and related health coverage under the state license. Selling Medicare Advantage and Part D also involves federal rules and annual carrier certification, which sit on top of the Florida license rather than replacing it.
